Welcome to “Ithaca”!

"Ithaca" is Birmingham’s Greek Cultural Society. It is actively working to advance the education of the public on Greek culture, language, history and arts. “Ithaca” is a Charitable Incorporated Organization and has a Registered Charity Number 1183839

"Ithaca" acknowledges the gracious and generous contributions of its patrons and its founding members who wholeheartedly support its aims.

"Ithaca" also acknowledges external funding received from the Office of the Presidential Commisioner of the Republic of Cyprus, Localgiving, and the Postcode Local Trust.

Ithaca’s income is used to pay rents, instructors, and hiring costs as necessary for the conduct of the above activities and the accomplishment of its purpose.

By donating, you are helping us to continue and expand our activities. Together we can go further! For this reason, we actively seek funding from other sources, including donations. Support us now!

In the 2023-2024 period, amidst the cost-of-living crisis, Ithaca organized the following free activities:

1) Bought 13 traditional Greek costumes to be worn by the dancers at events.

2) Free dance workshop: Cyclades from Yesterday to Today with famous dance teacher George Liaros who flew from Greece.

3) Organized four educational seminars on the topics: a) new research on the origins of the Greek Alphabet, b) Aidonia Treasure, c) St Paul in Corinth and d) Findings from new excavations in Byzantine Boetia 

4) Vasilopita cake including two prizes for the winners of the "flouri": a basket of Greek products worth £30 and a John Lewis Voucher worth £30.

5) Free entry to the Endless Summer 2023 photography competition with the main prize being £30.

6) Two free "speed-friending" coffee events.

7) Two free Greek dancing lessons.

8) Danced at the Celebration of the Three Hierarchs organised by the  Greek School Ayia Triadas Birmingham

9) Sponsored the creation of Ithaca's football team paying tournament participation fees and providing the team's shirts.

10) Subsidized the cost of the room for the teaching of Greek dances.

11) Subsidized the cost of the room for the teaching of Iconography.

Ithaca's management board has extensive experience in grant acquisition and management and is uniquely able to make sure that each scholarship will be awarded following strict criteria. The scholarship will bear the name of the philanthropist who offers it. Suggested scholarships are:

at the University of Birmingham. Annual tuition fees are about £10,000 for home students and £22,000 for international. More details can be found at the respective links.
